As of October 1st., the Law 12/2015, of 24 June, will come into force, granting the Spanish citizenship to Sephardic jews descendants, expelled from Spain in 1492. The law aims to rebuild the historical damage done to the descendants of those who were unjustly expelled back in those days.
Following all the inquiries that we receive every day, we have prepared a briefly outline explaining how the process may be from October 1. Step 1: Certificate of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain.
Sephardic status may be attested by Certificates of Origin, among other means of evidence. For the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain, may issue the certificate, you must deposit the documentation, which will be presented by a platform that will be available for such purposes.
Once reunited means of tests (the more documents you have, more beneficial for your citizenship record), the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain, examine your file and decide to issue the certificate. Among the documents you can supply to strengthen your requirement.
- The family language tradition.
- A birth certificate.
- The marriage certificate attesting, after the tradition of Castile, that the applicant might be included (or blood relatives) in the list of Sephardic families protected by Spain or those who obtained the citizenship with the Royal Decree of December 20, 1924.
- Any other document proving the status of Sephardic.

- Certificate issued by the president of the Jewish community in which you reside or competent rabbinic authority.
Step 2: Tests from the Cervantes Institute.
You’ll have to take a series of test about spanish history and culture, which will attest your links with the spanish civilization and their culture. Step 3: Presentation at the Ministry of Justice.
After you get your certificate of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain, test results of Cervantes Institute, and the law becomes enforceable (October 1st.), the platform for receiving the request will become available in the Ministry of Justice, and with those documents, you can demonstrate your sephardic condition before the Ministry.
Step 4: Appointment with the notary.
After depositing the file through the platform enabled by the Ministry of Justice, exceeding the corresponding tests, you will be requested to come to Spain to formalize the record with a notary.
The compliance with the requirements (be Sephardic of Spanish origin and have links with Spain), which is accredited by affidavit is essential to obtain the citizenship, but this can only be granted once a decision is taken by the Directorate General of Registries and Notaries, by which it grants access to its concession, once they received the affidavit and favorable reports. If the resolution was disfavorable, you have the right to appeal that decision.
The effectiveness of the decision that awards you with the citizenship is conditional upon the person interested satisfies the following conditions, in front of the competent civil registry office, and by reason of his domicile; these are:
- Apply for registration.
- Provide a new attestation force in the absence of a criminal record, legalized or apostilled and, if translated.
- Perform before the civil registrar the demonstrations legally applicable, related to the oath or affirmation of allegiance to the King and obedience to the Spanish Constitution and the laws.
The applicant must certify the compliance with the requirements above mentioned within one year from the day following the notification of the decision to the applicant. The breach of these conditions will result in the termination of the procedure.

Important to remember! The certificate of origin of your surname is only one of the requirements, you must provide more documents to justify your link with Sephardic descendants, plus overcome some tests, as indicated by the Ministry.
