Source of our Sephardic list names.
Now we’ll explain the origin of our list. Aside all the different processes of assimilation, persecution, etc., against the Sephardic minority, the result of our work is not supported by subsequent studies or misinterpretations.
In order to provide additional evidences (as the law dictates), interested person must supply probe of membership of belonging to the Sephardic community, and more specific, descendants of those expelled in 1492. We are conducting a massive research with our team of historians using primary source documents, archives and scripts, which means we’ll track your surname centuries back to any document, transactions or any legal act from that era. (there may be variations between c and z, v and b; occurrence of Ç which can be converted to C or Z, etc.).
We have copies of documents from the thirteenth century to the early fifteenth century where those names, many of them preserved in its original form until today. We are aware that only by going to the primary source of these documents, we can provide enough credibility and security, according to the stipulations of the law. Therefore, the documents are clear, without misinterpretation, verbatim and with minimal chance of error.
It’s not about historical studies or anthropological, socio-cultural observations subjected to minor or broad interpretations, but these documents from primary sources of investigation and history archives, augmenting the validity and strength of the file we deposit.
This list we are providing does not mean it’s definitive, all the surnames were clearly represented in the Sephardic community in those centuries, but simply we have no evidence yet of the inclusion of the names for various reasons (disappearance of documents, natural catastrophes, restricted access, etc.) or they have not yet been located by our investigators.
Important to remember! If you only have the certificate of Sephardic origin of your surnames, that does not guarantee to be sufficient all the documentation needed for you to submit your file, in order to obtain the Spanish nationality. The certificate of origin of your surname is only one of the requirements, you must provide more documents to justify your link with Sephardic descendants, plus overcome some tests, as indicated by the Ministry.
We are at your disposal to provide certificates of those surnames or any additional information. Request a Certificate of names of Sephardic origin, if you want to start your process of Sephardic citizenship
The certificate consists of a document containing the following information:
- Name of the applicant.
- Certificate number.
- Surname location area (the area or locality that refer to documents or archive found related that surname).
- Historical overview of the city: placing it in a general framework that sufficiently explain the Jewish / Sephardic presence in that geographical area.
- Transcript of the document. Most of the documents are written in peninsular languages from the thirteenth century to the seventeenth century. Regarding this scripture, our specialists do a work of paleographic transcription of the document. Paleography is the technique to read ancient scriptures.
- Probe of the original document. The image of the original document from which information was obtained is inserted into the certificate.
- Notes to the transcript of the document: These notes are used for a proper interpretation of the document.
- Its use is individual, as each of them are numbered with unique digits and the name of the interested applicant.
- Images of the documents where we found evidence of your surname in the area.
