The last days of the withdrawal agreement and the first steps into 2021 for UK citizens wishing to live in Spain
On February 1, 2020 the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland withdrew from the European Union as a result of the well known brexit. As a result, the Withdrawal Agreement entered into force, establishing a transitional period until December 31st, 2020. The latter guarantees the application of European Union law and the rights derived from it to all UK citizens until that date.
As such, it is not too late to benefit from the transitional period by which you can acquire Spanish residence. Indeed, if you are a UK citizen, you have have three main paths at the moment:
- Firstly, you may already be living in Spain in which case you will need to exchange your residency card for a “brexit card” before December 31st, 2020.
- Secondly, you may wish to come to live in Spain before December 31st, 2020, in which case you will need to apply for a specific “Brexit procedure”.
The current “brexit” requirements to come to live to Spain for UK Citizens :
- Application form (EX – 20).
- Valid passport (All pages, blanks included).
- Payment of fee (model 790, code 012).
- Power of attorney – Tolentino
- Documentation proving that you are in Spain at the moment, with either one of these two documents:
- Air ticket to Spain recently.
- Local census where you live in Spain.
- Supporting documentation on the ownership of an employee or self-employed worker. or documentation that proves sufficient financial means (as the case may be).
- Health insurance. (we can help you if you don´t have one)
- Enrolment of studies (as the case may be).
- Responsible declaration of sufficiency of financial means (as the case may be).
Lastly, should you, as a UK citizen, wish to come to live in Spain after the 31st of December 2020, different migration requirements will apply on which we will update you on as soon as a Brexit deal is met.
