Solicitud de Nacionalidad Española para ciudadanos Sefardí

Podrán adquirir la nacionalidad española demostrando su condición de sefardí y una «especial vinculación con España»

Service description

Description

Sephardis can obtain Spanish nationality by demonstrating their status as descendants of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in the 15th Century and a “special bond with Spain“. Plus, the most important thing is that they don’t have to give up their other passports.

Our team of immigration lawyers, together with our team of genealogists, will help you in this process.

To prove the Sephardic status a notary shall issue an affidavit indicating the status of Sephardic with Spanish origin and the applicant’s special connection with Spain, and “his conclusion will be submitted to the Dirección General de los Registros y del Notariado, who will decide, giving reasons, if the nationality has been granted or denied.”

If granted, once took the citizenship oath of allegiance to the king and obedience to the Constitution and to the laws, the nationality will be registered in the competent Civil Registry covering the municipality where the applicant is staying (or the corresponding consulate, if outside Spain).

Steps to follow
  1. Proof the Sephardic status, by presenting a Certificate of the Federation of Jewish Communities of your community – or another of Spain – signed by the President of your Jewish community or by the corresponding Rabbinic authority.

It can also be proved by your family language and your birth or marriage certificate, according to the traditions of Castile.

Another way to prove that is by demonstrating the inclusion of the applicant or his ancestors on the lists of Sephardic families protected by Spain to which the decree-law of December 29, 1948 and the Royal Decree of December 20, 1924 refers; or by the applicant’s blood ties to a person included in those lists.

The special bond with Spain shall be proved by passing an assessment test on the Spanish language and culture at the Instituto Cervantes and by demonstrating to carry out studies on Spanish history and culture, as well as charitable activities for the benefit of Spanish people or institutions.

  1. The application shall be presented in Spanish on the electronic platform through which the applicant must pay the corresponding charge set by Justice after studying the costs of the proceedings.
  2. Once the application is submitted, it shall be assessed by the Notarial Registry, who will certify the documentation presented.
  3. Once your documentation is certified, you shall take the citizenship oath of allegiance to obtain your Spanish nationality.
  4. Certified through your birth certificate
  5. Obtaining of your ID and Passport.
